President AEFCA

2018 – a year of change in Football?

Following the 2018-Worldchampionship in Russia we have to recognize some new highlights:
successfull counter-attack-football, many goals by standards, video-referee!

Flashback to the World-Championship 2010 – Spain succeeded with its „tiki-taka-football“, short-pass and ball-possession-football. In 2014 Germany developed further this offense-football-tactis.
Brasil, Argentina and others presented similar successful tactics on the pitch.

And in 2018?
The top-teams, that prefer the ball-possession-football, failed in an early stage of the tournament.
Even big players like Christiano Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar or Kroos couldn´t stop the flop of these offense-tactics.
Others successfully created well organised defense-tactics with topspeed-counter-attacks in addition with killing standards. Is this the future of football?
Be aware: four ruling worldchampions failed on early stage within the last five tournaments!

And then a small country appeared on stage – Croatia, a breath of fresh air! Pure, straight football!
Here in AEFCA-Symposium in Belek we will welcome Zlatko Dalic, Headcoach of croatian team, who will tell us how he created a successfull team out of great players.

Gerard Houllier, coach on european toplevel, will talk about his view as a coach on the 2018-worldchampionship.
Lilian Thuram, Worldchampion 1998, European Champion 2000, 142 matches for France, will raise an most important issue „No Racism in Football!“.

The Youth is the future in football!

Jean-Francois Domergue (UEFA-Head of football-development) will talk about UEFA-Elite-Youth-Programmes.
Matthew Crocker (LMA-England) will reflect about reasons, why english-youth-teams gained triple-success in 2017 on international stage!
Mariel Koerhuis, CEO of Cruyff-Institute Barcelona/Amsterdam, will show us possibilities for players and coaches, how to prepare for“ life after football“!

Dear Colleagues and Friends of AEFCA, I wish you a pleasant stay in wonderful Belek, valuable lectures and fruitful discussions among coaches!

Always Yours,
Walter Gagg

An idea becomes reality

By the 1970s, the Association of German Football Coaches (BDFL, Bund Deutscher Fußball-Lehrer) was organising its International Coaches’ Congress (Internationaler Trainer-Kongress, ITK) on a regular basis, a much-appreciated opportunity for coaches from different countries to get together and exchange views. People soon saw the need for an organisation in its own right, so that the UEF was founded in Vienna on 12 January 1980, with representatives from eight nations being the founding members:

Board and Founding Members of the UEF

  • Franz Leidl (Austria) President
  • Arthur Lenz (Denmark) 1st Vice-President
  • Fritz Buchloh (Germany) 2nd Vice-President
  • Willy Scholer (Luxembourg) 3rd Vice-President
  • Lothar Meurer (Switzerland) General Secretary (also of the BDFL)

Herbert Widmayer (Germany), Owe Bonnesen (Denmark), Frans de Bruyn (Netherlands), Albert Adams (Luxembourg), Reynir Karlsson (Iceland), Karl Decker (Austria), René Hüssy (Switzerland), and Manuel Alepuz (Spain) were the other Board members.
